A Diabetic's Guide to Drinking

Throughout adulthood, many people navigate a shifting relationship with alcohol, and managing the paradox of lowered blood sugar may look drastically different depending on a person’s age and diagnosis.

What do diabetics need to know about alcohol at age 21? At age 45? At age 65?

Though some studies show there might be health benefits to moderate alcohol consumption, it’s clear there’s no one-size-fits-all recommendation for drinking with diabetes because of the variety of experiences in the community.

With the perspectives of Drs. Theresa Granger and Tracie Kirkland , two faculty members at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work Department of Nursing , the following guide explores the potential impact of alcohol consumption on people with diabetes at different points across their lifespan.
